About Rupert

Experience

Rupert Stephenson is Regional Director for Devon, Dorset and Somerset at Black Brick and has more than 35 years’ experience in the prime residential property market.

Rupert began his property career in Central London in 1989, before moving into the prime Surrey market, where he specialised in areas including St George’s Hill, Esher and Cobham. He subsequently spent 20 years as Managing Director of his own successful independent land and estate agency in Surrey and Sussex, which he sold in 2016.

Having relocated with his family to a farm in Devon in 2010, Rupert combines extensive professional property experience with an exceptional first-hand knowledge of the West Country. He advises clients searching across Devon, Dorset and Somerset, with particular expertise in prime country houses, coastal property, farms and estates.

His long-standing relationships with estate agents, landowners and other property professionals throughout the region give his clients access to both the open market and, importantly, properties that are available privately or off-market.

Rupert’s approach is personal, straightforward and highly practical. Having bought, renovated and developed numerous properties himself, including listed buildings and his own farm in Devon, he understands both the opportunities and potential pitfalls involved in acquiring country property.

Beyond Black Brick

Rupert spreads his time between his family in Devon and Bath. Away from property, he enjoys boating in Salcombe, skiing, classic cars, shooting, walking his dogs and exploring the West Country’s many excellent pubs.

Working with Rupert

Still unsure whether a buying agent is right for you? Speak to Rupert for a confidential, no-obligation conversation.

A buying agent represents you – the buyer, not the seller. We help you find the right property, often before it reaches the open market, negotiating the best possible price, and managing the entire process – from lending to legals and more – right through to completion.

In the UK, estate agents represent the seller and are focused on achieving the highest price. They don’t represent the buyer – we do.

Access to off-market property is essential. Relying on property portals like Rightmove means you risk missing a large part of the market. In 2025, 73% of the properties we secured above £3 million were never publicly advertised.

Gaining access comes down to relationships, reputation and insight. We work closely with estate agents and owners, meaning our clients are often introduced to opportunities before they reach the open market. Sellers know we represent serious, qualified buyers – so we are often first in the door.

Many high-value properties are also kept off-market for privacy. Alongside our network, we use targeted search tools to identify properties that match our clients’ requirements before they are widely available.

A buying agent saves you time, reduces the risk of costly mistakes and gives you access to off-market opportunities, where more of the market now sits. We provide expert negotiation and market insight, guiding you through every stage of the buying process. We can also support relocation, helping international clients settle into the UK with ease.

Ultimately, we make sure you find the right property – and don’t buy the wrong one.

The difference is simple: estate agents represent the seller, while buying agents represent the buyer. We act entirely in your interests – from search through to negotiation and completion – ensuring you have expert representation at every stage.

We work across a wide range of property types, including apartments, family homes, penthouses and prime London properties, as well as investment and development opportunities, new build and period homes, and country houses, coastal properties and estates.

With over 100 years of combined experience, we cover the full spectrum.

While we are experts in Prime Central London, we also have a strong presence across the Home Counties, countryside and coast, along with access to sought-after international hotspots.

Wherever you’re looking, we guide you with the same level of expertise.
